Teh Gay
On the one hand I’m glad that the Republicans have decided that they’ll draw the line at stopping gay marriage. If it means that they take their eyes off obstructing the major parts of the Democratic agenda and we get better transit, better schools, and better healthcare then that’s a trade off I’m OK with this session. On the other hand, I really don’t see what they’re complaining about.
Rep. Jim Moeller announced today his legislative agenda, along with four other homosexual state representatives, intended to force homosexual marriage on the citizens of Washington state, regardless of the fact that such legislation would be voted down were it put on the ballot and presented to the people for a vote. Unfortunately, with the majority that the Democrats now hold in the state legislature and Mrs. Gregoire sitting in the Governor’s office, things do not look good. Republicans have said that they intend to fight back with a state constitutional amendment recognizing marriage as between one man and one woman.
Because seriously, what the state Constitution needs is more hate. I don’t understand why people need an amendment to preserve the status quo. Also, while I don’t know if Gregoire would sign a bill legalizing gay marriage, she seems to prefer civil unions.
From the article, according to Rep. Jamie Pederson, D-Seattle, “Marriage is a cultural concept that is recognized everywhere in the world,” which is exactly the reason why it should not be redefined to allow for homosexual marriage by a minority group in the state legislature. It goes to the root of our culture and defines who we are as a state and, ultimately, as a nation. If the minority is allowed to hold sway over the majority in this state and nation, and if they are allowed to enact legislation that would force people to accept and acknowledge behavior and lifestyles that are diametrically opposed to their beliefs and values, then we have great reason to mourn over the decline of our culture and our nation and the democratic rule of the eople, by the people and for the people.
Stupid “minority group” marriage is for the Brittney and K’fed. It’s for Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. You know, eople with values. It’s for the 20 minute Vegas wedding, not the 20 year plus commitment of some gays. It’s for us straights and we’re keeping it, because we hold a monopoly on values.
I certainly hope to see the Republicans push back against this proposed legislation hard, using every procedural roadblock possible to thwart Jim Moeller and the other representatives pushing this legislation.
Seriously, I’d prefer the Republicans just get out of the way of progress. But to the extent that I understand that they aren’t going to do that, I guess wasting time trying to block something that was probably going to fail anyway is better than maybe putting up roadblocks to things that the Democrats are going to pass, or are iffy.

Why do gays need more marriage? Wasn’t Rev. Haggard already married? Wasn’t Mayor West? Wouldn’t that be bigamy?
Seriously, one of my gay friends once told me flatly that he was glad, not to have worries like a big wedding to plan (or to pay for). He said that co-signing the papers on their condo was a big enough commitment ceremony.

Marriage should be legal, but not mandatory.

No Will it should be mandatory and, ideally, random.

Giffy,
Why not? If the goal of marriage is simply to procreate, we probably should look at what they’re doing in India.
